Abstract:

The “UNIQUE” project aims at a compact version of a biomass gasifier by integrating the fluidized bed steam gasification and the hot gas cleaning as well as the conditioning system into one reactor vessel. This work verifies the suitability of chemical hot gas cleaning depending on the demands of the catalytic filter candle and the fuel cell. The main focus was laid on alkali removal and sour gas control, as these can cause filter plugging and catalyst poisoning. The sorbent selection was based on thermodynamic modeling using a process model designed in SimuSageTM. Furthermore, sorbent tests were conducted using molecular beam mass spectrometry (MBMS) for hot gas analysis. The results of the thermodynamic calculations as well as of the laboratory experiments indicate that aluminosilicates are suitable for alkali removal. In addition, sulfur can be limited to values compatible to the demands of the catalytic filter candle and the fuel cell by using a new sorbent developed at Forschungszentrum Jülich.
