Abstract:

Mechanical harvesting losses are often considered the main responsible for low yielding in the Brassica cultivation. Thus, the needs to provide reliable values of the real harvesting losses, through on-field tests were pointed out. CRA-ING conducted experimental evaluation of product losses on Brassica carinata and Brassica napus, during three years, in north, centre and south of Italy, using different combine and head losses solutions. As results, it was pointed out that: 1) the crop losses affect up to 10% of the production even under the most adverse conditions or the worst adjustments, so they cannot affect, beyond this percentage, the productivity of the crop; 2) the use of the main mechanical applications available on the market, to facilitate grain harvesting both for specific brassicacee and to adapt wheat head, can bring benefits for a few percentage points of grain recovery; so, taking into account an average production of 3 t/ha, the corresponding increase of the harvested product, could be 60-70 kg/ha; 3) the main aspect to consider seems to be the correct adjustments of the combine harvester, since it significantly affects grain loss; 4) the assessment of the best harvesting time and crop condition, understood as growing and development of branches, could be the main aspect for defining the suitable harvesting unit and its adjustments.
