Abstract:

This work deals with the development of a one dimensional model for the investigation of the startup behavior of an updraft biomass gasifier. The model, based on heat and mass continuity equations, features a pseudo kinetic description of the process. Input for the model is the description of the initial state of the reactor (composition, temperature and flow rate) and operating parameters. We solve the system of equations constituting the model by the use of an explicit finite difference method; results show the behavior of the bed and its change in temperature and composition with time. We present the system investigation for different values of the air to fuel ratio and the steam to fuel ratio. We observed high variations of the bed composition with time, especially for high values of the steam to fuel ratio. Because of dilution effects a bed extinction occurs when a high amount of steam is injected to the reactor. Temperature plays a key role for this system and the most part of phenomena are temperature limited. We also noticed the presence of temperature oscillations.
