Abstract:

Wood briquettes are increasingly used in addition or as a substitute for wood logs in wood stoves. National fuel standards in Germany and Austria have triggered this development but new market impacts are expected from the ongoing European standardisation process within CEN TC 335. As the resources used for briquetting are various a large variability of the chemical composition and physical properties is likely to happen. In order to evaluate the compliance of currently marketed wood briquettes a total of 36 wood briquettes was purchased and analysed for calorific value, ash and element content but also for particle density and durability. Large variations were observed, particularly for the ash content: here 23 briquettes would meet the requirements of the new draft standard prEN 14 961-3 for class A1 (0.7 %), while 11 briquettes would not even fulfil the requirements of class A2 (1.5 %). Five samples had too high Ni concentrations and eight samples exceeded the limit for Cr. The Zn limit was exceeded in two cases and in only one case the requirements for S, As or Cd were missed; this happened for Cl and N in two cases. The ash content is the most critical parameter for commercially available wood briquettes.
