Farm-Scale Energy Production Solution in Finland

Abstract:

This study introduces a basic model for evaluating the feasibility and profitability of either combined or separated heat and/or power production technologies for Finnish farm enterprises. The technical solutions and combinations for decentralized heat and power production are numerous, but in Finland there haven’t been many efforts for this kind of energy production. The obstacles in Finland for small-scale decentralized power production (10 to 100 kW) have been the rareness and unprofitableness of technologies available and the lack of subsidies for independent small-scale power production. Today the rising prices of fossil fuels and electricity could make this kind of business more profitable and make small-scale energy users, such as farmers, more eager to produce their energy self-sufficiently with local energy sources. Using local fuels also improves self-sufficiency of energy production. Possible fuels for sustainable energy production can be e.g. wood biomass, biogas, energy crops and peat. This study will discuss on several types of typical Finnish farms which energy consumption and production sector varies from each other.
