Abstract:

Most of the tourist centers in Serbia are using fossil fuels or electricity for heating, while wood biomass from local forests is only partly used. Using wood biomass from forest as fuel in tourist mountain facilities has ecological and economical benefits. Our aim in this study is to show how wood biomass can replace fossil fuel in the public and tourists facilities in National Parks, which are under state protection. This could motivate other national and public facilities to use these resources from nearby forests for heating. Analyzing field data from these two National Parks, we have shown the possibility for substitution of fossil fuels with wood biomass from forests of National Parks, with low cost for transportation and logistics for tourist and public facilities. The research within this study includes forests and the characteristic enterprises for wood processing in or nearby National Parks. It is necessary to determine the scope, structure, concentration and characteristics of wood biomass available for energy in National Parks.
