Abstract:

Fuel wood resource estimations face major sources of uncertainty at the national level or beyond. There is then a crucial need for generic biomass functions that could provide robust estimations for fuelwood and carbon sequestrations in forests. The French Research Agency has funded the project EMERGE: "Compatible volume/biomass and nutrient contents equations for fuel wood and forest resource: tools for sustainable and clear management". This paper presents the consortium and the project objectives as well as the first step achieved so far: a database built from all experimental and technical data available in France, previously archived by each partner and representing large time series. Two other innovative techniques of rapid biomass assessment are presented: the terrestrial laser LIDAR and the X ray 3D scanner. The project EMERGE will finish at the end of 2012.
