Abstract:

Drained peatlands in Germany emit approximately 53 Mt CO2-equivalents per year, representing about 7% of total national greenhouse gas emissions. Rewetting these areas is therefore essential to meet climate targets, yet requires viable economic use concepts to incentivize land-use change. The MOOReturn project develops a complete value chain from paludiculture biomass to standardized MoorFiber products using the florafuelŪ-process. This study presents results from the first full-scale experimental campaign at the florafuelŪ-pilot plant in Munich using peatland biomass. Processing reduced ash content (550°C) by approximately 54 w-% and salt-forming elements decisively: chlorine by up to 98 w-%, potassium by approximately 85 w-%, and total sulfur by approximately 54 w-%. Reduction rates for peatland biomass are comparable to those previously demonstrated for urban park foliage, for which the florafuelŪ-process was originally developed. Results confirm the technical transferability of the washing-based pretreatment to paludiculture feedstocks and support the planned MoorFaserPlant Malchin with a production capacity of approximately 3,000 t/year of ISO-compliant homogeneous precursor material.
