Abstract:
Biobased materials such as straw have gained increasing attention in low-carbon construction, yet their application in building retrofitting remains limited in Germany. This study investigates barriers to the adoption of straw insulation by examining knowledge systems and actor networks, with particular attention to non-professional actors such as homeowners and end users. A mixed-methods approach combining spatial mapping, questionnaires, qualitative interpretation of interviews and conference materials, and diagrammatic analysis is used to explore patterns of knowledge production, circulation, and accessibility. A bioregional perspective is applied as an interpretive lens to examine how these patterns may be spatially conditioned. The results identify three main systemic barriers: uneven and intermediary-dependent connectivity between actor groups, constrained accessibility of knowledge for non-professional actors, and a mismatch between professional expertise and user priorities. While these barriers are broadly present, their intensity varies across contexts and appears partially related to biomass availability, actor density, and regional knowledge infrastructures. By reframing the limited adoption of straw insulation as a knowledge-system challenge rather than a technical issue, this study highlights the need for more accessible, context-sensitive, and inclusive approaches with participatory and self-build (DIY) practices as potential strategies to support knowledge transfer and broader engagement in retrofit processes.
