Abstract:
This study evaluates the potential of biochar derived from forest biomass and organic residues from the Catalonia region (Spain) for CO2 capture applications within the framework of the BIOFORIN project, which focuses on the bioregional management and valorization of forest and organic waste resources. Biochars produced via thermochemical conversion processes, specifically gasification, were characterized and tested for CO2 adsorption using thermogravimetric analysis under postcombustion conditions. The results showed adsorption capacities ranging from 32 to 45 mg/g, depending on the feedstock and structural properties of the material. Biochars derived from homogeneous lignocellulosic biomass exhibited higher microporosity and improved adsorption performance compared to heterogeneous feedstocks, where higher ash content and limited pore accessibility reduced efficiency. A strong relationship between microporosity and CO2 uptake was established, highlighting the critical importance of pore structure control in determining adsorption processes. These results represent a first step in the BIOFORIN framework towards the development and further modification of biochar materials for CO2 capture and broader environmental applications, including flue gas treatment.
