Abstract:
The LIFE CHANDELIER project addresses the challenge of decarbonising transport and valorising agro-food residues in rural European regions through the development of an innovative small-to-medium scale biomethane production system. The project integrates thermo-mechanical pre-treatment technologies, anaerobic co-digestion strategies and membrane-based biogas upgrading technologies to produce vehicular-grade biomethane from lignocellulosic agro-food waste streams. Demonstration activities are being implemented in Valderrobres (Aragón, Spain), combining small-scale and retrofitted industrial-scale facilities. The project aims to improve methane yields, process stability and operational flexibility while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting circular economy implementation in rural territories. Preliminary assessments indicate potential increases of up to 40% in biogas yield at small scale and significant reductions in fossil fuel dependence for heavy-duty transport applications. The proposed solution contributes directly to European climate neutrality objectives under the Renewable Energy Directive, REPowerEU strategy and Fit-for-55 package.
