Abstract:
The proposed study investigates a novel hybrid BECCS/DAC concept integrating biomass combustion with membrane-based carbon dioxide separation. Numerical analyses were performed for a 10 MW biomass-fired power plant fueled with wheat straw. The membrane separation system was designed to simultaneously capture carbon dioxide from flue gas and atmospheric air, enabling operation under negative-emission conditions. The influence of the number of separation stages and the atmospheric air-to-flue gas ratio on the purity of the captured CO2, process energy consumption, and power demand of the separation system was analyzed. The results showed that the high CO2 concentration in biomass-derived flue gas enables achieving CO2 purity exceeding 99% using only four separation stages. Compared to previously analyzed CCS/DAC systems integrated with gas–steam cycles, the proposed biomass-based configuration demonstrated significantly lower separation energy consumption ranging from 1.59 to 2.13 GJ/tCO2. For low atmospheric air flow rates, the DAC process could be integrated with only a slight increase in energy demand compared to conventional CCS systems. The study also identified key technological challenges related to membrane area requirements, flue gas drying, and the impact of biomass-derived contaminants on membrane durability.
