Abstract:
The hybridisation of concentrated solar power (CSP) and biomass is a promising option for supplying 100% renewable and dispatchable energy to electricity grids. This study analyses the thermo-economic performance of several hybrid CSP and biomass plants that follow a base-load strategy for the biomass block and a supplementary generation strategy for the solar block. The results showed that these systems can achieve capacity factors of up to 84.1%, comparable to those of base-load power stations, particularly when thermal energy storage (TES) systems are included. The scenario without TES achieved the best economic performance, with an LCOE of 0.125 USD/kWh. This value is 0.009 USD/kWh higher than the LCOE of similar plants using a solar profile-tracking strategy. However, the operational intensity required of biomass boilers to adapt to solar profiles may limit their operational viability and penalise their economic performance, an aspect that has been little explored in the literature. These results call for a more detailed analysis of these and other possible configurations of hybrid plants in which the balance between solar and biomass resources may offer a more attractive and viable return.
