Abstract:

The valorisation of agricultural and forestry residues through thermochemical conversion represents a strategic approach for renewable energy production and circular bioeconomy development. This study compares olive pruning residues and poplar biomass, representative agricultural and forest feedstocks of the Lazio Region, for fluidized bed gasification aimed at syngas and biochar production. Both biomasses were characterized and tested in a 1.5 kW prototype gasifier. Syngas composition (H2, CO, CH4, CO2) and biochar properties were evaluated to assess energetic and agronomic potential. Results showed that olive pruning residues produced syngas richer in hydrogen and carbon monoxide, while poplar biomass exhibited more stable gasification behaviour. Both biochars showed high carbon content (>80–90%) and suitable properties for soil amendment applications. Germination tests highlighted greater phytostimulant effects for olive-derived biochar compared to poplar biochar. The study demonstrates that both agricultural and forestry pruning residues can be effectively valorised through gasification, supporting integrated energy–agriculture supply chains and sustainable circular bioeconomy strategies in Mediterranean regions.
