Abstract:
Bedding is crucial for livestock welfare, influencing comfort, health, and productivity. Peat, long preferred for its absorbency, is declining due to environmental concerns. Reed canary grass (RCG) offers a sustainable alternative with good absorbency, adaptability, and growth on peatlands, while also supporting climate mitigation. On the other hand, rapid hygienization of equine manure offers an opportunity to recycle manure into bedding material as well as other bio-fertilizer products. The aim of this study is to conduct laboratory experiments on manure hygienization and evaluate the effectiveness of E. coli elimination. Additionally, the study aims to perform a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) of peat-based and RCG-based bedding, including integration of a manure hygienization system enabling immediate recycling of manure for bedding or other applications.
