Abstract:
The valorisation of agricultural residues is a key strategy to improve the circular bioeconomy and contribute to the production of renewable energy. Almond hulls are an abundant by-product obtained during post-harvest and transformation practices of agri-food residues, often underused or discarded. Their collection and processing for energy purposes, both through thermochemical and biochemical conversion process, represents a phase of the almond supply chain that must be optimized for sustainable management of by-products in valorisation process with low environmental impact. Seasonal differences in post-harvesting times (dehulling), particularly between summer and autumn, influence relative characteristics, which determine their applicability in bioenergy sector. The study evaluates the seasonal differences in almonds hull (summer and autumn), by evaluating how dehulling at different times varies their potential for energy purposes.
