Abstract:

The integration of biomass-derived processes with advanced hydrogen production technologies is essential for achieving low-carbon energy systems. In this work, a novel integration of charcoal gasification with chemical looping hydrogen generation (CLHG) is proposed to enhance hydrogen production while enabling efficient carbon capture and utilisation (CCU). Experimentally, the kinetics of CO production via the reverse Boudouard reaction were determined using biomass-derived charcoal and CO2 in a fixed-bed reactor. A power-law kinetic model was developed and subsequently implemented in Aspen Plus to simulate a multi-stage gasifier. The proposed gasification system was then thermodynamically integrated with a modified CLHG configuration and a monoethanolamine (MEA)-based carbon capture unit. The experimental results show that optimal gasification is achieved at 935 °C and a CO2 flow rate of 51 mL min.¹, yielding a CO concentration of 36%. Simulation results demonstrate that the integrated system increases hydrogen yield by 23.4% compared to conventional CLHG operating at 10 bar. Furthermore, CO2 emissions are significantly reduced from 4.586 t h.¹ to 0.871 t h.¹, with approximately 77% of the captured CO2 recycled to the gasifier. The CO2 exergy flow is approximately 74% of the total captured CO2, which is reutilised within the process. Overall, the proposed integration demonstrates a promising pathway to improve hydrogen productivity, reinforce carbon circularity, and reduce emissions in chemical looping systems, offering strong potential for future scale-up and industrial application.
