Abstract:

Increasing shares of renewable electricity generation and the electrification of heat supply are creating new operational challenges for distribution grids. In district energy systems, transformers are particularly affected by high loads, fluctuating demand, and reverse power flows. Their operating state can therefore serve as a local indicator of grid stress. This paper presents a conceptual framework for improving energy system resilience through biomass-supported hybrid systems combined with transformer-based traffic-light control. The investigated system consists of multiple building-level energy cells aggregated within a district cell that is connected to the public electricity grid through a transformer. Within the district, a local electricity market enables electricity exchange between buildings before residual import or export occurs through the transformer. The hybrid systems integrate pellet boilers or biomass combined heat and power units with heat pumps, thermal energy storage, electrical storage, and photovoltaic generation. Transformer utilization is used to classify local grid conditions into traffic-light states, which trigger local electricity price modifications and encourage decentralized flexibility responses. The proposed framework links building-level autonomy, district-level market coordination, and transformer-based grid-state awareness to reduce grid stress and improve energy-system resilience.
