Abstract:
This paper outlines a project by the PtX Lab Lausitz that aims to map the global sustainable land-use potentials useable as biogenic carbon sources for Power-to-X production. It describes various challenges and possible solutions to locate and classify suitable land areas, ranging from data and methods over defining and operationalizing suitable sustainable criteria up to critical land-use conflicts. With respect to scientific and political relevance, and based on the critical examination of existing literature, we argue for a more reliable quantification of global present and future carbon availability for sustainable PtX applications, and policy decisions based on robust data, clear categories, and differentiated sustainability criteria.
