Abstract:
The aim of the study was to promote and activate the local production and use of biogas on farm-scale in the region of South Savo in Finland. In the joint project carried out by Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT and South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences – Xamk, the possibilities for local farms to utilize biogas were examined, along with the available utilization technologies and the competitiveness of these technologies in different applications. The project mapped local opportunities and barriers through a survey targeted at farms. The operational model for biogas utilization was also examined using reference examples from outside the region. The different applications of biogas considered in the study included heat, electricity, agricultural machinery, and transport. In addition, the need and possibilities for biogas upgrading, as well as the side effects and co-benefits of biogas use, were examined during the study implementation. The usability and suitability of biogas were evaluated in farm-scale production sites in South Savo, and the results were used to identify new opportunities for the local utilization of biogas. The study results promote and facilitate the adoption of competitive and environmentally friendly biogas solutions and encourage farms to make new investments. Furthermore, the utilization of local resources improves the vitality and security of supply of rural areas and farms, with the final goal of achieving a carbon-neutral farm.
