Abstract:
In EU level and in Finland is an ongoing transition on reducing the dependency on fossil energy. Price of emission allowance and consumer price of energy has risen vastly over the past years. The importance of domestic fuels in Finnish supply security has also become more important topic and tightening CO2 emission targets guide towards renewable energy sources. In Finnish decentralized energy production, one option to reduce the dependency on fossil energy and imported electricity is to increase the production and utilization of biogas and biomethane. Finnish national target is to increase the biogas production to 14.4 PJ (4 TWh) by 2030. Currently the production of is 3.2 PJ (0.9 TWh). There are total of 140 biogas plants in Finland in 2025.The aim of the paper is to evaluate the possibilities to promote the use of biogas in rural areas Finland. The aim is to evaluate how biogas and biomethane are currently produced and consumed in Finland and what kind of possibilities and plans does Finland have for the future. Estimation is that production of biomethane should increase and its consumption, especially in transport sector, is estimated to increase.
