Abstract:

Crop rotation offers agronomic, ecological and economic benefits, highlighting improved soil health, efficient use of water and better control of pests and diseases. Maize is a common traditional crop from Spain and other countries from South location. Industrial hemp cultivation is being introduced into crop rotations due to its mainly positive impacts such as greater competition against weeds and a reduction in water needs compares with maize. Hemp cultivation is proving to have multiple uses in the textile, construction and energy industries, in this research fiber productions for construction use were evaluated on rotation with maize crop. A trend towards increased maize grain yield was observed in the second year in the rotation, this situation should be confirmed in the coming years of crop rotation. In the soil on rotations systems evaluated a continuous decline of carbon pools in the traditional monoculture was obtained contrasting sharply with the stabilization observed in the diversified rotations. To evaluate the circularity of whole value chain of hemp, the waste (hemp dust) was studied as feedstock in anaerobic co-digestion process developing two different Organic Load Rates (Essay 1: 1 g VS L-1 d-1 and Essay 2: 1.5 g VS L-1 d-1) obtaining similar methane productions. Regarding the digestate compostion, an increase was observed in NPK nutrients of digestate when the amount fed to the digester was raised.
