Abstract:
Fraunhofer UMSICHT is conducting research and development on an innovative thermochemical conversion technology that enables the conversion of ash-rich biogenic residues into hydrogen-rich synthesis gas through combined pyrolysis and gasification. The present study demonstrates the EXO process using the conversion of two different ash-rich biogenic residues: sewage sludge and sieve overflow from biowaste. In the EXO pilot plant at Fraunhofer UMSICHT, a hydrogen content of 38.2 vol.%wb and a gas production rate of 11.39 mN³/h are achieved for the conversion of sewage sludge, while a hydrogen content of 36.7 vol.%wb and a gas production rate of 15.27 mN³/h are obtained for the conversion of sieve overflow. The corresponding hydrogen production rates amount to 397.4 gH2/h for sewage sludge and 522.81 gH2/h for sieve overflow. The results demonstrate the versatility and performance of the EXO process for converting various ash-rich feedstocks into high-quality synthesis gas and underscore its potential for sustainable energy carrier production and resource utilization.
