Abstract:
The BGREENER project evaluates the potential of industrial hemp as a sustainable and multifunctional crop in the La Vera region, Extremadura (Spain), combining biomass production, soil improvement, biodiversity and rural development. The study was carried out over two growing seasons, in Losar de la Vera in 2024 and Villanueva de la Vera in 2025, comparing the varieties Futura 75 and Mona 16. The results showed adequate agronomic development of the crop and a relatively stable dry matter content between varieties and seasons, with values ranging from 31.40% to 33.69%. In 2024, Futura 75 and Mona 16 showed dry matter contents of 32.51% and 32.78%, respectively, while in 2025 the values were 31.40% for Futura 75 and 33.69% for Mona 16. This performance is relevant for the industrial valorisation of biomass. In addition, soil analyses showed a positive evolution, with an increase in organic matter from 2.00% to 3.23% and in organic carbon from 1.16% to 1.89%. The results show high biomass production and an improvement in the organic status of the soil. Therefore, hemp represents a viable alternative for promoting sustainable agriculture, circular economy and rural development in Extremadura.
