Abstract:

The author presents an integrated industrial collaboration enabling biomethane injection into the natural gas distribution network in the Szarvas region of Hungary. The project involves MOL Plc., MVM Égáz-Dégáz Gas Network Ltd., OPUS TIGÁZ Gas Network Ltd., and Aufwind Schmack Elso Biogáz Ltd., jointly establishing the complete biomethane value chain from biogas production and upgrading to grid injection. The biogas plant produces approximately 11.0 million mł of biogas annually, from which around 7.0 million mł of biomethane can be produced; injection into the distribution network is scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter of 2026. The project required technical, regulatory, and operational coordination among multiple system operators. Key elements included the evaluation of upgrading technologies, ensuring compliance with Hungarian gas quality requirements, the development of an appropriate technical solution, and the establishment of a multilateral cooperation framework. One of the most significant innovations of the project is the interconnection of two medium-pressure natural gas distribution networks operated by different distribution system operators, enabling continuous biomethane injection even during periods characterized by low natural gas demand. The results achieved so far include the definition of the technical concept, the signing of the connection agreement with the gas distribution system operator, the conclusion of the development agreement with the transmission system operator, and the near-complete alignment of operational requirements among the involved parties. The project demonstrates how structured industrial cooperation can overcome system-level barriers and provide a scalable model for future biomethane integration initiatives in Hungary and across Europe.
