Abstract:

The transition to a low-carbon economy and the challenges posed by climate change intensify the search for efficient, renewable feedstocks. Sugarcane bagasse, a widely available lignocellulosic residue in Brazil, represents a strategic raw material for biorefineries. Among the value-added chemicals obtained from this biomass, furfural stands out as an intermediate for producing resins, solvents, and bio-based fuels. This study aims to characterize three high-yield hybrid sugarcane and energy cane bagasse varieties derived from genetic crosses to assess their furfural produc-tion potential. The analyses conducted include determining moisture, total solids, and ash content, soluble and insoluble lignin, structural carbohydrates (sugars, cellulose, hemicellulose, and inhibitors), and acetyl group concentrations, fol-lowing standard procedures. The compositional profiles provide insights into how these hybrids differ in structural and chemical parameters that influence furfural yield and conversion efficiency, based on the high yield of these cane varieties. Such characterization is essential for correlating biomass composition with process performance. The results reveal the most promising hybrid for furfural production, and evaluate its suitability compared to conventional sugar-cane bagasse. Overall, this work advances biomass utilization in Brazil, promotes the integration of renewable chemical production, and supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
