Abstract:
Advanced biofuels are essential for decarbonizing transport sectors that are difficult to electrify, including aviation, shipping, and heavy-duty road transport. Since 2009, IEA Bioenergy Task 39 has monitored the global development of advanced biofuel technologies through an open-access database of pilot and demonstration facilities. The database provides systematically validated information on technology pathways, feedstocks, production capacities, operational status, and regional deployment trends. This work presents a long-term assessment of commercialization progress with a particular focus on cellulosic ethanol. The analysis shows that, despite strong early expectations, commercialization of cellulosic ethanol faced major barriers, including high production costs, technological complexity, feedstock logistics, and unstable policy support. More than 30 facilities were idled or closed after 2015. Nevertheless, recent developments indicate renewed momentum. By 2024, global operational capacity reached 556,000 t/a, with significant additional capacities under construction and planning. Brazil emerged as the leading growth market through integration with existing sugarcane and ethanol infrastructure, while China rapidly expanded capacity since 2018. The study highlights the critical role of demonstration plants, policy support, and international collaboration in scaling advanced biofuels and advancing sustainable low-carbon transport systems.
