Abstract:
Climate change and the increasing frequency of severe wildfires have highlighted the need for sustainable forest management strategies in Mediterranean forest ecosystems. The energy utilization of forest biomass residues may contribute both to wildfire prevention and local bioeconomy development. This study presents a comprehensive methodology for estimating the forest residues potential, contributes to defining appropriate procedures for the collection, management and exploitation of forest residues, examines these procedures both from a technical and economic point of view and estimates the final cost of biomass feedstock under alternative scenarios of bioenergy value chains. In this context, the case of forest residues utilization in the Dadia-Lefkimi-Soufli Forest National Park, Greece is investigated. The application of the methodology showed that the available potential amounts to1,500 dry tonnes annually. An indicative estimation of the total cost of collecting, processing, and transporting woody forest residues biomass ranges from 36 to 45 euros per tonne of dry biomass, while the cost of pelletization process was estimated at approximately 30 euros per tonne of dry biomass. The proposed framework demonstrates the importance of integrating environmental sustainability criteria with geospatial and techno-economic analysis for the development of viable forest biomass value chains in Mediterranean forest ecosystems.
