Abstract:
The reuse of demolition waste from construction sites is a key aspect of implementing the principles of sustainable development and the circular economy in today&39;s construction industry. The amount of waste generated during construction and demolition presents a significant environmental challenge, requiring solutions to reduce waste volume and extend the lifecycle of materials. Reuse reduces the consumption of natural resources and lowers the carbon footprint, thus promoting more ecologically sustainable construction practices. In Finland, a material utilization rate of 70% has been set for construction and demolition waste, which must be achieved by 2027. Wood from waste materials is primarily utilized for energy production, which has been the most practical option in Finland from both an environmental and economic perspective. However, achieving the utilization target requires new measures for waste material use, as millions of tons of construction and demolition waste are generated annually, and the current utilization rate remains far from the goal (in 2022, only 54% of the waste was utilized). One of the objectives of the CIRCON – Competences and Materials for Low-Carbon and Circular Economy-Based Construction project was the pyrolysis of waste wood and the subsequent testing of the resulting material for its suitability as a filter material. During the pyrolysis process, waste wood was converted into activated biochar at a temperature of 1000°C. The performance of the produced activated carbon was compared to commercial materials in filtration tests.
