Abstract:
In Mikkeli, Finland, information campaigns were piloted to improve the efficiency of biowaste sorting in 2020–2024. As a result of the campaigns, the amount of separately collected biowaste per inhabitant in a residential area in an urban area increased by up to 47 percent compared to the baseline. Pilots were also carried out at regional collection points in sparsely populated areas where residents were activated to participate in separate collection. Mixed waste composition studies were used to determine the proportion of biowaste in mixed municipal solid waste and the success of sorting. With the help of communication, the proportion of biowaste in mixed waste was reduced from 46% to 18% by weight. Positive developments were achieved in the pilot areas in terms of participation in separate collection of biowaste and recovery of waste volume, which increases nutrient recovery and the self-sufficiency of the area. Further processing of separately collected biowaste increases, among other things, the amount of renewable energy.
