Abstract:
Waste management-related transport causes environmental emissions. When aiming for a low-emission society, it is important to minimize emissions. Environmental emissions from waste transport can be reduced up to 98 percent by using low-emission biofuels and advanced vehicle technologies. By optimizing collection routes and using the economical driving habits, the emissions can be reduced without significant vehicle investments. In this study, carbon dioxide emissions and costs resulting from the collection and transport of mixed waste and separately collected biowaste were examined in a pilot area in Finland. The data included the waste collection routes, the equipment used, as well as kilometers and fuel consumption data collected by the waste management company over a period of approximately one month. Based on the results, the most climate-friendly option involves using biogas as fuel and collecting both biowaste and mixed waste simultaneously with a two-compartment vehicle.
