Abstract:
Indonesia’s rapid urban development has intensified municipal solid waste (MSW) challenges, leading to overflowing landfills and environmental concerns. One promising solution is converting landfill gas (LFG) to BioLNG—an innovative renewable energy source. This study investigates the economic viability of producing BioLNG from landfill gas at 10-hectare and 65-hectare landfill sites in Indonesia, using Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) as the key metric. A first-order decay model estimated methane generation, while capital and operational costs were benchmarked using international data. Results show LCOEs of USD 52/MMBtu for the 10-hectare site and USD 50/MMBtu for the 65-hectare site, indicating that larger-scale operations benefit from economies of scale. However, these costs remain significantly higher than the current market price of conventional LNG (USD 12–18/MMBtu), highlighting the need for targeted policy support, such as carbon credits and feed-in tariffs, to enhance competitiveness. This study underscores the potential of landfill-based BioLNG as a dual solution for waste management and renewable energy but emphasizes that policy interventions and strategic scaling are critical to achieving economic feasibility.
