Abstract:
Nanocellulose (NC) has applications in many different areas, ranging from automotive manufacturing, agricultural, medicine, food industry, biotech industry and extending to the energetic field. As filler into biobased polymers, it acts as a nanoreinforcement, improving the mechanical and permeability properties of the bionanocomposites. IASIS project (Curing contaminated and saline land with Industrial crops and producing biomass for high-value applications) is an HORIZON-JU-CBE project (Project number: 101157430) that aims to provide solutions for curing both contaminated and saline land through phytomanagement and the selected high-yielding, nonfood (industrial) crops will provide biomass feedstock to develop intermediate and end bioproducts, following a cascading biorefinery approach, via economic-viable value chains. One of the tasks of the project is to scale-up the nanocellulose production from different lignocellulosic crops and in order to verify its properties, to test it as nanoreinforcement in bioplastics. Therefore, the aim of the work was to test nanocellulose (produced from giant reed), as reinforcement to different biobased polymers, chitosan, pectin and starch.
