Abstract:

It was studied the combustion of pyrolysis vapours produced during pyrolysis of residual forest biomass (RFB) in a prototype of auger reactor integrated with two combustion reactors for pyrolysis vapours burning. An internal combustion reactor is dedicated to provided thermal energy to support the pyrolysis process and an external combustion reactor is used to burn the surplus pyrolysis vapours and to produce thermal energy for other applications. The prototype of pyrolysis (auger) reactor has a biomass processing capacity of up to 10 kg/h, corresponding up to 50 kWth (biomass input). It was made an analysis of the integrated system considering the evaluation and definition of operating conditions that support the autothermal regime of operation of the pyrolysis reactor supported on the combustion of a fraction of pyrolysis vapours in the internal combustion reactor, and the combustion of surplus pyrolysis vapours in the external combustion reactor. The process was evaluated considering the mass flow of RFB fed to the pyrolysis reactor, the biochar production mass rate, the combustion air fed to combustion reactors, the temperatures along the reactive system and the composition of the exit flue gas from the internal combustion reactor. The results show that the prototype of integrated reactor guarantees biochar production under autothermal operation, with a yield of 0.19 kgbiochar/kgbiomass dry basis. The study demonstrates that the combustion of the pyrolysis gas can effectively supply the heat required to sustain the pyrolsis process, while also enabling the production of thermal energy in an external combutsion reactor.
