Abstract:

This study evaluates the potential for electricity, biogas, biomethane, and hydrogen production from biomass residues in the state of Bahia, Brazil, focusing on four key sectors: sugarcane energy, crop residues, pulp and paper mill effluents, and urban sewage. Methodologies were adapted from established frameworks, incorporating sector-specific parameters for residue availability, conversion efficiencies, and regulatory standards. Results highlight significant untapped energy potential, particularly in the sugarcane sector (e.g., 76 GWh/year electricity from vinasse in Medeiros Neto) and urban sewage (e.g., 53,554 MWh/year in Salvador). Biomethane production reached 28.7 million m3/year in the sugarcane sector, while hydrogen yields from sewage and industrial effluents demonstrated viable decarbonisation pathways. Spatial analysis revealed concentrated potentials in municipalities with industrial plants or high agricultural output. The findings underscore Bahia’s capacity to diversify its renewable energy mix by integrating biomass residues, aligning with circular economy principles and climate mitigation goals.
