Abstract:

This study evaluates the potential of macaúba (Acrocomia aculeata) as a raw material for the sustainable production of biofuels for aviation, focusing on its role in carbon sequestration and the recovery of degraded lands. The research used data from the MapBiomas project to map degraded areas in seven Brazilian states, aiming to estimate the feasibility of cultivating macaúba to meet the demand for up to 8 billion liters of SAF (aviation biofuel) by 2037. The results indicate that to meet the demand for 3.7 billion liters of SAF, approximately 2.4 million hectares would be required, and for 8 billion liters, about 5.2 million hectares. In an agro-silvopastoral system, macaúba demonstrated a carbon sequestration potential of 12.79 t CO2eq/ha/year, which could capture up to 66.2 million tons of CO2eq to meet the demand for 8 billion liters of SAF, contributing about 10.6% of the aviation sector's emissions in 2024. Macaúba represents significant potential to help fulfill Brazil’s climate commitment.
