Abstract:
This paper is based on the book commanded by the Working Group on Energy Transitions of the Brazilian G20 viewing the updating of the book co-edited in 2008 by BNDES and CGEE entitled Sugarcane-based bioethanol: energy for sustainable development, to build one of the deliveries of the Brazilian Presidency of G20. Aim: providing updated information on technical, economic, and environmental foundations of sustainable biofuels applied in the transportation sector (road, air, shipping etc.); highlighting the production chains related to sugarcane and corn bioethanol for the production of biofuels with broad and immediate application in the global fleet of light vehicles, including models equipped with electric engines (hybrids and in the future fuel cells); increasing applications as raw material for the production of aeronautical biofuel (ATJ, Alcohol to Jet route) and bunker fuel; providing data and information of interest to policymakers and decision-makers in the energy/environment field in Brazil and other countries, in particular those with the potential to develop the production and/or the use of bioethanol as a relevant component to promote decarbonization and sustainable development.
