Abstract:
ColdSpark® is a Research and Innovation project (Grant agreement No. 101069931) under the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme. The 42-month project, launched in June 2022, will validate a non-thermal plasma (NTP) technology to produce hydrogen and solid carbon with a total energy consumption of < 15 kWh/kg H2 at an industrial scale from natural gas or biomethane without any catalyst, contributing to the global zero emissions. ColdSpark® achieves optimal methane conversion efficiency with zero direct CO2 emissions, unlike conventional SMR, which emits large amounts of CO2, or electrolysis, which demands high electricity and water consumption. However, the economic and environmental viability of any commercial methane splitting process centres critically on the effective utilization of the solid carbon co-product.
