Abstract:

The aim of the BioBoosters project was to further advance the green transition of businesses and to support the mostly rural regions in their economic development. Implemented in 2023-2025, the BioBoosters hackathons offer a unique collection of 18 case studies of circular and bioeconomy transition. As the paradigm of circular bioeconomy is the theoretical background – the Project’s activities are thoroughly checked against this framework, from three main perspectives – the subjective (companies acting as challenge providers), the objective (challenges and solutions) and the territorial (the regions the hackathons originated in). In effect the study offers a truly unique analysis of circular bioeconomy paradigm put into practical activities via the 18 different hackathons organized in nine different Baltic Sea regions. The analysis provides valuable practical examples of business operations in the bioeconomy value chain and at the same time delivers actual challenges and solutions implementing in the original and innovative manner the constituting elements and principles of the circular bioeconomy paradigm. The third and concluding tier of the analysis is the territorial perspective of the BioBoosters rural regions, their circular and bioeconomy oriented smart specializations and the hackathons’ influence on the current and future green development opportunities of these territorial structures.
