Abstract:
The protection of peatland is an important measure to mitigate global warming and biodiversity loss. At the same time, peat is extracted for the production of growing media and is still the most commonly used component globally. With growing awareness of the ecological importance of peatlands, governmental regulations for peat use are tightened. Therefore, more sustainable peat substitutes have to be explored. In a multistakeholder dialogue, Meo Carbon Solutions (MCS) has developed the international certification system for peat substitutes and substrates HORTICERT. HORTICERT aims to support the use of peat substitutes encompassing ecological, social and economic principals and guide the horticulture industry in its transition to a more sustainable future.
