Abstract:

The BIOVALOR project promotes the sustainable management of marginal lands through intercropping of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs). A 2-ha demonstration plot in Lubia (Soria, Spain) was established with Juniperus communis, Thymus mastichina, and Lavandula luisieri. High survival rates (87–96%) and promising biomass and essential oil yields were observed in the first year, exceeding common benchmarks. MAPs demonstrated suitability for degraded soils, requiring minimal inputs while improving biodiversity and soil health. Essential oil composition met expected standards. MAP cultivation offers a viable, sustainable alternative for non-arable lands with both environmental and economic benefits.
