Abstract:
The local use of agroforestry by-products for energy purposes represents not only an exemplary model of supply chain development but also a crucial strategy to enhance the possibility to produce renewable energy at territorial level. This approach contributes significantly in reducing reliance on fossil fuels and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This study aims to define a consolidated methodology to evaluate the quantity and distribution of agricultural and agro-forestry biomass in central Italy by analysing multiple national databases. Specifically, the research integrates data from the Biomass Atlas (ENEA), the SELVA project (CNR), Forest Management and Assessment Plans (PGAF), and agricultural production datasets such as the FADN and IACS databases. These sources provide rough information on the availability and extent of biomass, both agricultural and agroforestry, across the region. By applying crop-specific product/by-product ratios, the study estimates the quantity of residual biomass suitable for the development of energy supply chain at local level. The outcomes offer a robust geospatial and statistical database for biomass availability, laying the groundwork for identifying potential energy supply chains. Furthermore, the analysis supports future evaluations on the technological conversion of biomass such as gasification and anaerobic digestion and the sustainable reuse of resulting residues, including biochar and digestate.
