Abstract:
An advanced CFD model for biochar production in a batch reactor is presented and validated in this study. The model is a further development of a previous model and is able to simulate the complex batch pyrolysis process in an externally heated reactor. The influence of parameters, such as heating temperature, biomass bed conditions and biomass-specific pyrolysis behaviour on the process can be assessed. Thus, the process variable (mass flow and temperature, heating of the medium, reactor capacity, moisture content and composition of the biomass) as well as the reactor geometry can be adjusted, such that an optimal pyrolysis behaviour is achieved. This paper provides an overview about the model, which shows good agreement with experimental results, making it beneficial for optimizing pyrolysis reactors and thus achieving economically effective framework conditions for biochar production.
