Abstract:

Wastewater is a crucial problem in the organization of urban infrastructure and in the planning of industrial activities in modern societies. Climate change and the energy crisis caused by the increasing global demand for energy and the depletion of fossil resources are causing increasing concern. The olive oil extraction process produces highly contaminated wastewater (OMW). This waste is often discharged untreated into the ground or water sources. The biodegradation of these wastewaters during the growing of Scenedesmus sp. and Neochloris oleoabundans microalgae was studied. These microorganisms were grown in a medium composed of 30% of Rodríguez-López culture medium, 20% of oil washing wastewater, 20% of olive washing wastewater and 30% urban wastewater (from secondary treatment) and 5% of inoculum. The experiments were conducted in orbital shaker with Erlenmeyer of 50 cm3 of useful capacity, under the following conditions: pH = 7.0, T = 298 K, Agitation =150 rpm with continuous illumination at an intensity of 359 µE m-2 s-1. The higher value of maximum specific growth rates was obtained for N. oleoabundans (µm = 0.061 h-1). In relation to the cellular growth, the mayor volumetric productivity of biomass (Pb) was reached in the presence of Scenedesmus sp 1.4 10-3 g dm-3 h-1. The most relevant percentage of removal of NO-3 and NO-2 (90.7% and 82.3%, respectively) was achieved with Scenedesmus sp.
