Abstract:
Lignin is the natural binder in wood and lignocellulosic plants and is regarded as the main natural and renewable source of phenolic compounds. Technical hydrolysed lignin is an industrial residue, derived in high temperature diluted sulfuric acid hydrolysis of wood chips or agriculture lignocellulosic biomass to sugars. In recent years, the increased valorization of hydrolysis lignin in value-added applications, including adhesives for bonding fiberboard panels, has gained significant research interest. Its incorporation in the composition of fiberboards will enhance both the environmental performance of the panels and the complex use of natural resources. This study investigates the potential of using residual lignin from acid hydrolysis as a binder in manufacturing of fiberboard panels. It is presented a comparative analysis of fiberboard properties obtained with reduced participation of phenol formaldehyde resins and the involvement of hydrolysed lignin. For that purpose, a modification of the adhesive system and hot-pressing regime is conducted. The significant role of panel density in the activation of hydrolysed lignin as a binder is established. It is found that technical hydrolysed lignin can be successfully used as an eco-friendly additive to reduce the content of formaldehyde resins in the composition of fiberboard panels.
