Abstract:
This study evaluated the viability of three types of lignocellulosic biomass (Aleppo pine, Oak and Chestnut tree) to obtain sugars from pyrolysis oils and subsequent biorefinery processing. All three biomass species offered similar conversion yields to bio-oil when performing an intermediate pyrolysis at 450 ºC, with values around 30-40 wt.% of the initial dry biomass. The results showed that Aleppo pine offered the highest sugar yields with more than 20 wt.% of the initial bio-oil. Therefore, it is the more suitable raw material if the objective is to maximise sugar production during pyrolysis. The sugars detected with GC-MS and LC-ELSD were levoglucosan – the sugar obtained in a higher quantity – levoglucosenone, cellobiosan, arabinose, xylose and glucose. Overall, the study contributes to the progress of biorefinery strategies aimed at converting forest biomass into high-value chemicals, paving the way for a more sustainable circular bioeconomy.
