Abstract:
The latest potential of Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) technology, identifying its barriers, main challenges, and limitations, is evaluated. The current status of the technology is also provided. The main aim of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies is to remove and durably store CO2 from the atmosphere and deliver negative emissions. Currently the capacities of industrial removal technologies are very limited and play a negligible role. Most current operating BECCS facilities are located in the USA, primarily focused on bioethanol production. Notably, there is only one large-scale operating BECCS plant capable of capturing and storing 1 million tons of CO2 per annum (Mtpa). In Europe, BECCS facilities that are either under construction or at an advanced stage of development rely on biomass combustion or Waste-to-Energy (WtE) processes for combined heat and power (CHP) generation.
