Abstract:
The petrochemical industry is facing the challenge of mastering the transformation from fossil-based to renewable and circular raw materials. The production and use of biopolymers is one way of reducing the high GHG emissions in order to become climate neutral by 2045. In this paper, seven high-demand biopolymers are selected, assessed from a technical, economic and environmental perspective, and compared with their petrochemical counterparts. The biopolymers considered are at different stages of development and perform differently in the assessment. Although no biopolymer is optimal in every respect for all industry demands, PLA performs well across technical, economic and environmental criteria.
