Abstract:
Biomass-based district heating (DH) networks play a central role in Austria's transition to sustainable energy systems. With around 2,400 such systems in operation, many now require retrofitting to meet emerging efficiency and emission targets. The BM Retrofit project addresses this need by integrating innovative technologies and local renewable resources. The DH system in Wald im Pinzgau is a prime demonstration site, incorporating waste heat from a hydropower plant via a 250 kW heat pump, and a 30 m³ thermal storage tank. These measures significantly reduce both biomass and fossil fuel use, enhancing sustainability. This paper details the technical approach, system integration, outcomes, actor engagement, and replication potential, contributing to Austria's and Europe's climate goals.
