Abstract:

Sequential cropping could be a way to produce low ILUC biomass with energy cover crop grown into double cropping systems (2 primary food/feed crops 1 energy cover crop over 2 years) and reach 19 to 23 Mt DM planned in various French scenarios. This study aimed to assess the potential of energy cover crops (ECC) into French double cropping systems at LAU 1 (Local Administrative Unit) level. French Land Parcel Identification System (LPIS) - RPG Explorer was used to identify from 2015 to 2021 fields where ECC could be included. This data was crossed with a list of ECC and their potential yield. The impact of insertion criteria of ECC on the available biomass was analysed so as the acreage already used for forage production in western breeding farms. An additional assessment of the resources has been carried out by changing crop rotation. With 23.8 Mt DM, biomass from ECC could reach French objectives, al least in Western with a main proportion of winter ECC. ECC would have to be supported to increase farmers’ willingness to produce and local specifications would be considered.
